Saturday we decided to take a little day trip to Mesa Verde National Park - just about a 2.5 hour drive from Moab. I didnt know much about it- just that it was a place with a lot of Native American dwellings.
My goodness- it was the neatest place! I wish we would have had more time there. (Actually... it wouldnt have mattered much because I dont think that physically I could have done more. There are hikes with 135+ stairs and 30 foot ladders to climb. Next year...)
It was amazing to see how people lived so long ago, and how resourceful they were. The dwellings were just beautiful. We hiked down to the Spruce Tree House. It was about a 1/2 mile round trip hike. All downhill getting to the dwelling and UPHILL the whole way back. (that was a bit of a challenge- but we made it!) It was really neat to talk with the girls about the dwellings, and the places people lived. There are about 120+ rooms in the Spruce Tree House and its estimated that 60-90 people lived here. You can see the parts of the rock where its visible that they had fires going to keep warm and cook, and the areas were people ground corn... it was just a really neat experience.
The girls became little Junior Rangers- they were so proud of that. They completed a little book, and a ranger swore them in as junior rangers. They loved it. (And even Ava got a little ranger badge)
